Can I charge extra for premium products in a fixed-price bundle?
Yes — this is possible with a feature called product surcharges, but it isn't turned on by default. Read on for how it works, then get in touch if you'd like it set up for your store.
What it does
Product surcharges let you keep a bundle at one fixed price while charging a bit more when a shopper picks a premium option. For example, a "build your own set" bundle priced at $149 could add $20 automatically when a shopper chooses a diamond-upgraded pendant, making that set $169 — without you needing to price every possible combination as a separate product.
- The extra amount is a flat add-on per variant, not a percentage — useful when premium components cost more to source by a fixed amount rather than a proportion of price.
- Different variants of the same product can carry different surcharges (for example, a longer chain length costing more than a shorter one).
- On the storefront, a product that carries a surcharge shows what it adds (like "+$20") instead of its usual price, and a product with no surcharge shows "Included".
- Surcharges are added on top after any discount is applied, so a discount code or automatic discount never accidentally discounts the surcharge away.
Why it isn't just a setting you can turn on
Product surcharges read the extra amount from a Shopify variant metafield that you maintain — Kitenzo doesn't calculate or guess it. Getting this working well means:
- Confirming (or creating) a metafield on your product variants that holds each surcharge amount.
- Populating that metafield across your relevant products and variants.
- Having our team turn on the feature for your store and point it at that metafield.
Because of that setup work, this feature currently sits behind a feature flag and is enabled on request rather than being available to every store by default.
How it works once it's set up
Once enabled for your store, there are two places this shows up:
- Settings > General > Product surcharges — where the variant metafield holding the surcharge amount is named, once per store.
- An Add product surcharges toggle on the individual bundle's Pricing card — off by default, so turning the feature on for your store doesn't change any existing bundle until you opt a bundle in.
Is this a good fit for my bundle?
Product surcharges work well for a fixed-price bundle where most components are interchangeable but a few premium options should cost a bit more — jewelry "build a set" style bundles, gift boxes with an optional upgrade, and similar setups.
It's not the right tool if you want pricing to scale as a percentage of the product's own price, or if your bundle is already priced by simply adding up each product's price (that's the default Kitenzo pricing behavior, and needs no special setup at all).
